A love letter about how Brick lane creates memories for one of its residents
Dear Arthur,
Fifteen years ago today we were having dinner at your favourite restaurant Nazrul, in Brick lane. It hasn’t been the easy, it hasn’t been pleasant and most of all it hasn’t been the best of times trying to get through the day, whilst still living in the same place where we met. However, I am still grateful for all the memories which we had created together back in the day, whilst visiting The Truman Brewery every Sunday when we had a chance to.
Today is a splendid sunny day, which reminded me of when we took a stroll to Borough market, deciding which beverages we would drink, whilst sitting at one of the bar stools. This made me think about the connection we had when tasting the magnificent white and wines that the stalls sold, in the market. I do miss our romantic dates, especially when the sun was setting, which the sun’s rays brightened up your beautiful blue eyes.
I feel so lifted when I look down from our balcony, as I could see the bridge where we had our first kiss. The walls were fulfilled with graffiti, which instantly makes me imagine how bright and colourful your soul is. I do wish you were still here, as I feel empty and not so myself anymore.
Sometimes I often take myself to one of Brick lanes most visited pubs ‘Brew Dog’, just to try comfort myself with the voices of others. However, I still can’t distract my thoughts and feelings about you, as the pub still serves the food and drinks which you always used to have on our evening dates.
Walking down the high street, which was filled with plenty of vintage clothing shops made me reminisce the outfits and items you had bought from Hunky Dory, for your birthday. As your birthday is coming up next week, this really made me fluster up Arthur as I tried my best not to get upset. This would be the next birthday without you and your kind smile.
I wish you were here to witness and feel the warming atmosphere that Brick Lane creates, as more and more tourists visit our hometown. As I keep seeing families and children strolling down the path, we used to complete our morning jog on this made me envision the future we could have had together, as it would have been such a perfect place to bring up our children in.
On the days which you were feeling down, we used to take a visit to Jens Plants and Florist, in Brick Lane. I kindly remember the way your face used to slowly brighten up with the scent of your most cherished yellow tulips. From now on, I have chosen to keep a bunch of the same flowers in the vase you bought me from Brick Lane Souvenirs, as this created a sense of reassurance and happiness.
I find it hard not to think about the things we planned to do every Friday, at Ninety One Living Room. The music which the bands played live built my emotions up with neglect and sorrow, as the songs out loud reminded me of when you danced on the stage happily. I tend to avoid this bar in brick lane, as it sends me to many memories of when you were still around.
Arthur, you are now my angel, as you have filled Brick Lane with many memories and love that I look back on every minute of the day. I hope you are bright and merry up in heaven looking down at the place where we first met.
Love Catherine
